We need great people to come to US: Trump weighs in on H-1B visa debate

H-1B visa debate

When asked about the H-1B visa debate at a press conference on Tuesday, President Trump said that “I like both sides of the argument, but I also like very competent people coming into our country, even if that involves them training and helping other people that may not have the qualifications they do”.

US President Donald Trump, who took office on Monday, has weighed in on that he preferred “both sides of the argument”, while also noting he liked “very competent people coming to our country”.

“I like both sides of the argument, but I also like very competent people coming into our country, even if that involves them training and helping other people that may not have the qualifications they do,” he said while addressing a joint press conference at the White House on Tuesday with Oracle CTO Larry Ellison, Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son, and Open AI CEO Sam Altman.

Trump weighing in on the debate comes as some of his close aides, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, have voiced support for the H-1B visa programme as it allows qualified tech professionals to come to the US. However, several other supporters of the President have also opposed the visa, saying that Americans were losing jobs because of it.

In further remarks at Tuesday’s press conference, Trump also said that “we want competent people coming into our country. And H-1B, I know the programme very well. I use the programme. Wine experts, even waiters, high-quality waiters — you’ve got to get the best people”.

“We have to have quality people coming in. Now by doing that, we’re expanding businesses and that takes care of everybody. So I’m sort of on both sides of the argument, but what I really do feel is that we have to let really competent people, great people, come into our country. And we do that through the H-1B programme,” he added.

It allows a person to stay in the US for six years. The visa is initially granted for three years, and can be extended by another three years. People who apply for H-1B visa extension are, however, advised not to travel outside the US once they file an application to do so.

The H-1B visa debate gained traction ever since Trump reiterated that he would launch an immediate crackdown on illegal immigration once he returned to the White House.

“We want competent people coming into our country. And H-1B, I know the programme very well. I use the programme. Maître d’, wine experts, even waiters, high-quality waiters — you’ve got to get the best people. People like Larry, he needs engineers, Masa also needs… they need engineers like nobody’s ever needed them,” Trump said.

“So, we have to have quality people coming in. Now by doing that, we’re expanding businesses and that takes care of everybody. So I’m sort of on both sides of the argument, but what I really do feel is that we have to let really competent people, great people, come into our country. And we do that through the H-1B programme,” Trump said.
