President Donald Trump has begun his promised flurry of executive action on Day 1. With his first batch of memoranda and orders, Trump repealed dozens of former President Joe Biden’s actions and withdrew the US from the Paris climate accords, among other actions. He also says he’s pardoned hundreds of people for their roles
Trump not confident ceasefire in Gaza will hold
US President Donald Trump said Hamas is weakened, but he’s hardly certain that the temporary truce between Israel and Hamas will hold. “I’m not confident,” Trump told reporters. “That’s not our war. It’s their war.” He said that his administration “might” help rebuild Gaza, which he compared to a “massive demolition site.”
Trump revokes US sanctions on West Bank settlers
US President Donald Trump has revoked his predecessor Joe Biden’s executive order that enabled sanctions against violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank, the White House announced. Trump revoked Biden’s executive order from February 2024, which paved the way for the designation of several settlers and groups accused of perpetrating violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967.
Marco Rubio wins unanimous nod to be top US diplomat
The US Senate unanimously approved Marco Rubio as secretary of state on Monday, putting the fellow senator on the front line of President Donald Trump’s often confrontational diplomacy.
Rubio, who is the first Hispanic and first fluent Spanish speaker to assume the position of top US diplomat, is Trump’s first cabinet nominee to be confirmed by the Republican-led Senate, only hours after the inauguration.
Unusually in a highly partisan era, Rubio was confirmed 99-0, with several senators from the rival Democratic Party describing Rubio as a friend. One Senate seat was made vacant by the inauguration of Vice President J.D. Vance.
Trump reinstates Cuba on state sponsor of terror list: White House
The US President Donald Trump swiftly overturned Joe Biden’s earlier move to strike Cuba off a terrorism sponsors’ blacklist on Monday. This reversal came shortly after a prisoner exchange agreement had led to Cuba’s removal from the list. Later that day, following the inauguration ceremony, the White House issued a formal statement confirming that Trump had cancelled Biden’s Cuba-related decision alongside numerous other executive orders.
Our live page will soon come to a close. Here’s a summary of all the events that happened on Monday, the first day of Donald Trump’s second term as president.
- In the final hours of his presidency, Democrat Joe Biden issued a series of “preemptive pardons” for those he feared would come under attack during a Trump presidency.
- They include Biden’s brothers, immunologist Anthony Fauci, General Mark Milley and the members of the House Select Committee on the January 6 attack, including former Congress member Liz Cheney.
- Faced with an Arctic blast outdoors, Trump held his inauguration ceremony inside the Capitol Rotunda, surrounded by dignitaries and family.
- Trump’s inauguration was the first to invite foreign leaders to participate, and many far-right politicians were in attendance, including Argentina’s Javier Milei and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni.
- In his inaugural address, Trump denounced the “radical and corrupt establishment” of his predecessor, as well as the alleged “weaponisation” of the justice system.
- He also advanced a vision of the future that called for the expansion of US territory, including by “taking” the Panama Canal “back” from Panama.
- The Republican leader also announced he would declare a state of emergency at the southern border with Mexico and declare drug-trafficking cartels “terrorists” in order to expel them from the country.
- Trump also withdrew the US for a second time from the Paris Agreement, a landmark international treaty designed to combat climate change.
- Later, at a rally for supporters at the Capital One Arena, Trump signed a series of executive orders freezing government hiring and halting the addition of federal regulations, among other things.
