“No Reason To Worry,” Says India After 5 HMPV Cases: Top Points
From zero to five, the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) case tally in India saw a drastic jump on Monday with infection reported among children.
New Delhi:
India has reported five cases of the Human Metapneumovirus, a respiratory virus that recently gained attention after its outbreak in China. The Centre said the HMPV is already in “circulation” globally and that “there’s no need to panic”.
Cases LIVE: Indian authorities confirmed the detection of several human metapneumovirus cases on Monday amid growing concern about the respiratory virus. Two cases were reported from Bengaluru in Karnataka while a third tested positive after being hospitalised in Gujarat. The development comes even as China and other countries battle a major outbreak of viral fever and pneumonia.
What is the Human Metapneumovirus?
HMPV is a common respiratory virus that causes lower and upper respiratory infections. It is not a new discovery and cases have been reported from various countries over the years. There is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV and prevention the cornerstone of controlling its spread.
Cases LIVE: Most of the HMPV cases show flu or cough and cold like symptoms. Since it is not a virus which has been detected for the first time in India, it is even difficult to identify whether a person has contracted the virus or is it just normal cough and cold.
During the winter months, there is an increased likelihood of transmission of respiratory diseases such as seasonal influenza (H1N1, H3N2), influenza-like illness (ILI), and severe acute respiratory illness (SARI). HMPV, specifically, presents with symptoms similar to the common cold and typically resolves on its own within 3 to 5 days
Cases LIVE: Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Monday assured that the people do not need to worry amid rising concern around HMPV as the health systems and surveillance networks of the country are vigilant and ready to respond promptly to any emerging health challenges.
