Taste Atlas recently released a list titled, ‘Worst Rated Dishes in the World’ and the list mentioned India’s popular Missi Roti as one of the worst dishes in the world. In the list, released in January 2025, the flatbread was placed at the 56th rank in a list of 100 worst foods from around the world. The list included jellied eels, frog eye salad, devilled kidneys as well as blodpalt which is a dumpling made with blood. Take a look at the list.

For the unversed, Missi Roti is a traditional Indian flatbread made primarily from a mix of gram flour (besan) and whole wheat flour, combined with spices and herbs. This flavorful bread is popular in North Indian cuisine and is often served with curries, dals, or yogurt. As per food experts, the key ingredients for thi bread include finely chopped onions, green chilies, fresh coriander, carom seeds (ajwain), and spices like cumin, turmeric, and red chili powder, which are kneaded into the dough for added taste. Missi Roti is typically cooked on a tawa (griddle) or in a tandoor, giving it a slightly crispy texture with a smoky flavor when cooked in the latter.

Ingredients required
1 cup besan, 1 cup wheat flour, 1 onion, 2 green chilli, 1 tbsp coriander leaves, 1 tsp ajwain, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp red chilli powder, salt to taste, ghee for cooking, and water as required
Method
In a large mixing bowl, combine gram flour, whole wheat flour, onions, green chilies, coriander leaves, ajwain, cumin seeds, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt. Add 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee and mix well. Next, add water to knead a soft dough. Let it rest for 15–20 minutes. Now, divide the dough into equal portions and shape them into balls. Roll out each ball into roti. Heat a tawa on medium heat. Place the rolled roti on the tawa and cook evenly from both sides. Once done, serve the hot Missi Roti with a dollop of butter, yogurt, or alongside dishes like dal, sabzi, or curry.

Another comment reads, “Who even cares mate, they put so many spanish dishes on here and so little stuff from nordic countries, clearly they’re probably american or nordic-european, tastes are subjective. If they’d tasted all the stuff we probably would’ve had loki ki sabzi and some other stuff on here too.”
