BY Vijayendra calls Siddaramaiah caste census push ‘brahmastra’ to retain seat
BJP Karnataka President BY Vijayendra criticised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for hastily pushing the caste census report. He claimed Siddaramaiah was using the census as a ‘bramhastra’, or last-ditch weapon to retain his post.
Adding to the ongoing caste census controversy in Karnataka, BJP state chief BY Vijayendra criticised the move to table it in the cabinet. He accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of hastily pushing it to safeguard his Chief Minister’s position. He questioned Siddaramaiah’s intentions, alleging that senior Congress leaders had admitted flaws in the report.
Vijayendra suggested that the Chief Minister’s push for the census was a desperate attempt to distract the public from growing concerns about his administration and potential scandals.
“I feel that Siddaramaiah cannot retain his Chief Ministerial post for long,” he claimed, suggesting that Siddaramaiah was too embroiled in controversies to remain in power.
He further asserted that Siddaramaiah, facing allegations and pressure, was trying to utilise the caste census as a ‘brahmastra’, or last-ditch weapon, to maintain his political standing.
Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara defended the caste census, stating that it has been an ongoing process for years. He emphasised that the final report has been submitted, and it is up to the government to make decisions based on the data.
Parameshwara urged that instead of politicking, everyone should let the truth emerge from the findings. He added, “Our aim is to shape government programmes based on census realities.”
The Karnataka Caste Census, officially known as the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey, was initiated in 2015 during Siddaramaiah’s first term. It aimed to document caste-wise data to ensure benefits are distributed proportionately. Although completed in 2018, the report remains undisclosed to the public.
The Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes submitted the report in November 2023, but some groups opposed the findings.
he JD(S) also took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), posting a sharp criticism against Siddaramaiah. They accused him of playing political games, calling him “Mudaramaiah” and alleging that he had brought out the “caste whitener” to erase the stains of the MUDA scam. According to the JD(S), Siddaramaiah, who has been accused of corruption in the land scam, is clinging to his position and using the caste census as a smokescreen to divert public attention from the issue.
