Mahmudullah announces T20I retirement, to hang up boots after India series

Bangladesh’s all-rounder Mahmudullah has announced that he will retire from T20Is after the three-match series against India.

Bangladesh veteran Mahmudullah has announced his decision to retire from T20 Internationals (T20Is) following the ongoing three-match series against India. The 38-year-old all-rounder, one of Bangladesh’s most distinguished players, will bring an end to a remarkable T20I career spanning over 17 years. Mahmudullah joins Shakib Al Hasan in what marks a significant loss for Bangladesh, as the team has now lost two of its star all-rounders in T20Is within just 30 days.

“Yes, I’m retiring from T20Is after the last game of this series. It was pre-decided,” he said at the pre-match press conference ahead of the second T20I against India in Delhi. “It’s the right time to move on from this format and concentrate on ODI,” he added.

Mahmudullah made his T20I debut back in 2007 against Kenya, and since then, he has become an integral part of Bangladesh’s cricketing journey. His career in the shortest format is the third-longest in T20I history, behind only his teammate Shakib Al Hasan and Zimbabwe’s Sean Williams. Across 139 T20Is, Mahmudullah has amassed 2,395 runs at a strike rate of 117.74 and also contributed with the ball, taking 40 wickets

“Regarding Riyad [Mahmudullah] bhai (brother), from what I understand, this series is very important for him, He might have discussions with the selectors. I am not entirely clear on this, but I believe there will definitely be discussions with the selectors and the board [regarding his future],” Najmul Hossain Shanto said.

It is worth noting that before the Delhi T20I against India, Mahmudullah has played 139 T20Is for Bangladesh, where he has scored 2395 runs and has taken 40 wickets as well. His presence in the T20I set-up for Bangladesh would be heavily missed should he retire from the format.
