Chhattisgarh to offer MBBS course in Hindi, says Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has announced that the MBBS course will now be offered in Hindi from the 2024-25 academic session. This decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to provide medical education in Hindi and aims to support students from rural areas who face challenges with English-language medical courses.
CM Sai said books in Hindi will be introduced in the first year from 2024-25 session and the health dept has been asked to arrange books and study materials.
Chhattisgarh will begin offering the MBBS course in Hindi starting this academic session, as announced by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion of ‘Hindi Diwas,’ Sai expressed pride in aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, first mentioned during a 2022 rally in Uttar Pradesh, to provide medical education in Hindi.
“Our government has taken a big decision on Hindi Diwas. The MBBS course will now also be taught in Hindi. Books in Hindi will be introduced in the first year from this session (2024-25). The health department has been asked to arrange books and study materials,” Vishnu Deo Sai was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
This initiative is part of efforts to “revise our education policy at every level, moving away from the outdated Macaulay imperialist education system,” he stated. He also noted that the National Education Policy has been fully implemented in Chhattisgarh.
Sai emphasised that the initiative will aid students from rural areas, who frequently come from Hindi medium schools and face challenges with medical courses taught in English.
Studying in Hindi will enhance their foundational knowledge, provide a deeper understanding of the subject, and help them become more proficient doctors.
The move was part of efforts to “change our education policy at every level from the old Macaulay imperialist education policy”, he said, adding the National Education Policy had been fully implemented in Chhattisgarh. “The move will benefit students from rural areas since they mostly come from Hindi medium schools and face difficulty in medical courses despite being talented due to the use of English language. Studying in Hindi will strengthen their basics, help them develop a deep understanding of the subject and make them good doctors,” Sai asserted.
Hindi Diwas commemorates the historic decision taken by the Constituent Assembly on September 14, 1949 to designate Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as the official language of the Union of India.
