The Delhi government has launched Project Abhishikt to train teachers in identifying and supporting gifted students with a tailored curriculum. The initiative aims to ensure that talented students receive the attention and resources needed to reach their full potential.

The Delhi government has launched an initiative called Project Abhishikt to provide a specialised curriculum for gifted students who often go unnoticed in traditional school settings. Under this project, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) is conducting a five-day training programme for 104 teachers at a government school in Kalkaji.

The programme is specifically designed to equip teachers with the skills needed to identify and nurture students from classes 6 and 9 who demonstrate exceptional abilities.

The training began with a session focused on “Introduction and Understanding Giftedness,” aiming to help educators recognise and understand the needs of these talented students.

According to SCERT joint director Nahar Singh, the main objective of Project Abhishikt is to bridge the gap between the current academic performance of gifted students and their true potential. This will be done by offering specialised support and a carefully crafted curriculum tailored to their unique abilities, ensuring these students are not overlooked in favour of those needing more remedial attention.

The initiative is being implemented in 15 government schools across Delhi, focusing on providing a more inclusive educational environment where all students, including the most talented, receive the attention and resources they need to thrive.

The initiative, which includes students from Class 6 and Class 9, was launched by the Directorate of Education and SCERT, aiming to ensure that the innate abilities of gifted students are not overlooked. The training featured sessions on ‘Introduction and Understanding Giftedness’ and an overview of the project’s inception.

“The primary goal of the project is to close the gap between the current abilities of these students and their immense potential. This will be achieved by providing specialized support and a well-developed curriculum to ensure their success,” SCERT joint director Nahar Singh said.

The first day of the training programme was themed ‘Introduction and Understanding Giftedness’ focused on the inception of the project.

Honing skills

Delhi government will conduct two intelligence tests to identify ‘gifted children’, including the specially-abled, studying at its schools and hone their potential through a specialised curriculum, officials said. They will also be provided counselling, mental health services and exclusive classes to help them adapt to the specialised environment better, they added.
