Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead a unique yoga session at the U.N. Headquarters in a historic celebration to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga which will see the participation from top U.N. officials, envoys from across the world and prominent individuals.
In a video message on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 21 said India has always nurtured traditions that unite, adopt and embrace, and made a fervent appeal to eliminate contradictions, hurdles and resistances through yog exercise.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh joined hundreds of Navy personnel on board INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier here, to participate in the yog celebrations on the occasion.
The U.N. General Assembly declared June 21 as International Yog Day following a resolution moved by India and co-sponsored by a large number of nations. The first International Yoga Day was observed on June 21, 2015.

“At first when we were introduced to yoga, we felt like it was too slow and it was not easy to get all the asanas right. Many of us preferred pumping weights in the gym to practising an hour of yoga. But eventually, we have come to realise that practising exercise has helped tremendously in the power of mindfulness,” Hardik said.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw performs Yoga in Odisha’s Balasore
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw performed Yog in Odisha’s Balasore to mark the 9th International Yoga Day. Mr.Vaishnaw had yesterday held a meeting with the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police and State Government officials in Balasore, where nearly 300 people were killed in an accident involving three trains earlier this month.
Mr. Vaishnaw who arrived in Balasore on Monday for a three-day tour of the State on Tuesday interacted with local individuals who generously provided assistance. The Minister announced ₹1 crore from his MP local area development (LAD) fund and another ₹1 crore from Railways funds for the development of Bahanaga village and the hospital there.

Students were at the forefront of the yog day celebrations in Himachal Pradesh, which witnessed several events being organised to marks the occasion.
People assembled at public places with their mats from early morning to perform exercise and mark the occasion.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur, who took part in an International Day of Yog event in Hamirpur, said the day is being celebrated all over the world due to the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Yog has become a symbol of love and hope around the globe, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its worldwide popularity.
Interacting with reporters on the sidelines of an event on the occasion of the International Day , Mr. Singh said, “The theme of Yoga Day this year is ‘One Family, One Earth, One Future’.”
“Despite our diverse cultures, languages, foods and attire, yoga has brought the world together and emerged as a symbol of peace and love. It is a significant contribution of Prime Minister Modi,” he said.
International Yoga Day celebrated with gusto in Karnataka
The ninth International Day was celebrated with great fanfare in many parts of Karnataka on June 21. Thousands of people took part in the event aimed at promoting good health with sound mind. The theme of Yoga Day this year is ‘Yoga – Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.
The main event took place on the grand steps of the imposing Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru where Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Karnataka Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader and Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao took part.
Swami Vachanananda, who is famed as ‘Shwasa Guru’, guided the gathering to perform exercise. A large number of government employees, students and social activists took part in the morning programme.
Yoga is art of science for healthy living: Andhra Pradesh Governor
Yog is an art of science for healthy living that focusses on bringing harmony between the mind and body, Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer said marking the ninth International Yoga Day.
The Governor participated in the celebrations held at Raj Bhavan and noted that yog reduces stress.
“Yog focusses on bringing harmony between the mind and body, keeps the body fit and helps in reducing stress,” said Nazeer in a press release issued by Raj Bhavan.
Rajasthan Governor marks yoga day, performs ‘asanas’ at Raj Bhavan
Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra led the celebrations at the Raj Bhavan in Jaipur to mark the International Day of Yog. Mr. Mishra, who was joined by Raj Bhavan officers and other staff members, performed ‘asanas’ such as ‘bhastrika’, ‘kapalbhati’, ‘nulom vilom’ and ‘bhramari’, a spokesperson said.
Leader of Opposition Rajendra Rathore performed yog with locals in Churu. In Jaipur, former BJP State unit chief Satish Poonia marked the day with Central Reserve Police Force personnel at Jaigarh.
Yoga needs to be transformed into people’s movement: Maha CM Shinde
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said transforming the practice of yog into a people’s movement was the need of the hour to tackle stress and lifestyle changes.
Mr. Shinde was speaking after participating in the International Yog Day events at the Gateway Of India, the State Secretariat and the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai.
He said it was a matter of pride that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was representing the country at the United Nations to mark the International Yoga Day.

Yoga has become India’s ‘soft power’, says Health Minister Mandaviya
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said yog exercise has become India’s “soft power” as he marked the International Day of Yoga by leading a session with hundreds of participants at AIIMS, New Delhi.
Recognising its universal appeal, in December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yog by a resolution. The day aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practising yog exercise.
Addressing the event, Mr. Mandaviya said, “yog exercise is an ancient tradition of India but, with time, its practice started to decline. Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a huge impetus to yoga and, today, there is no place in the world where yoga is not practised. It has become India’s soft power.”
Haryana CM Khattar asks people to make yoga integral part of their lives
On the occasion of International Day of Yoga, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar asked people to make yog exercise an integral part of their lives by devoting at least half an hour every day to it.
“We can inspire others to do yog exercise only when we do it ourselves,” said Mr. Khattar while addressing a gathering in Panipat on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga.
He along with people performed various yoga poses at the event.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) said yog exercise is “Bharat’s civilisational contribution” to the world. Yoga is not limited to physical exercise but is essentially a holistic way of life, the RSS said in a tweet on the occasion of the International Yoga Day.

Yoda Day event in Surat has set new Guinness World Record: Gujarat Minister Sanghavi
Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi said the Yog Day event in Surat has set a “new Guinness World Record” for the largest gathering of people for a yog exercise session at one place.
More than one lakh people took part in the event and broke the previous record, Mr. Sanghavi said.

Yoga mats made by tribal artisans to be promoted this Yog Day
Besides spreading awareness about the benefits of yog exercise and meditation worldwide, this Yoga Day, India will also be promoting the skill of its tribal artisans. The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd (TRIFED) is collaborating with Ministry of Ayush to supply 34,000 yoga mats procured exclusively from tribal artisans across the country. These will bear the distinct designs and motifs representative of their respective communities.
